Meta Platforms and technology company Corning recently signed a deal valued at up to $6 billion to provide fibre-optic cable capabilities for the social media giant’s AI data centre buildout.
Corning will expand its manufacturing capabilities in the US state of North Carolina, including an enlargement of its fibre optical cable facility where Meta will serve as the anchor customer.
The fibre supplier, which provides its Gorilla Glass to Apple, will supply Meta with its latest generation optical fibre, cable and connectivity products.
Corning CEO Wendell P. Weeks stated Meta’s investment will also support an increase in the company’s employment levels in the state by 15 per cent to 20 per cent and help sustain a workforce of more than 5,000 employees.
CNBC reported the deal runs through 2030.
